Labelling the event as the ‘World Cup of Shame’, Amnesty has consistently lambasted the conditions under which migrants have had to work in Qatar, which it says has exploited workers through the kafala sponsorship system.

Shortly after the team punched its ticket to the World Cup with a 1–0 win over Austria in October, Denmark’s national soccer body, the Danish Football Union (DBU), ramped up its criticism of the tournament.

Keen to make their voices heard, the DBU announced that Danish players will wear training apparel displaying messages of support for human rights throughout the competition.

Amnesty has called on other nations — including the England national team — to use this year’s World Cup to speak out on human rights issues in Qatar.
